Paradox Interactive Adjusts Strategy Following Game Development Setbacks
Following the cancellation of Life By You and the troubled launch of Cities: Skylines 2, Paradox Interactive has outlined its revised approach to game development. The company acknowledges shifting player expectations and a reduced tolerance for post-launch bug fixes.
Paradox Interactive Addresses Recent Cancellations and Delays
Heightened Player Expectations and Persistent Technical Challenges

Paradox Interactive CEO Mattias Lilja and CCO Henrik Fahraeus discussed evolving player attitudes towards game releases. Lilja highlighted increased player expectations and decreased trust in developers' ability to effectively address post-release issues.
The experience with Cities: Skylines 2's problematic launch prompted a more rigorous approach to quality assurance. The company emphasizes the need for broader pre-release player feedback. Fahraeus stated that more extensive pre-launch player testing for Cities: Skylines 2 would have been beneficial, advocating for greater transparency and player interaction before launch.

The indefinite delay of Prison Architect 2 reflects this new strategy. While acknowledging positive gameplay, Lilja cited persistent technical challenges as the reason for the delay, prioritizing a high-quality, stable release. He emphasized the impact of tighter gaming budgets and heightened player expectations on the decision.
The delay differs from the Life By You cancellation, which stemmed from unmet development goals and a failure to maintain the desired development pace. Lilja clarified that Prison Architect 2's issues are primarily technical, describing some problems as "harder to fix than we thought."

Lilja noted the increasingly competitive gaming market, where players readily abandon games with significant flaws. This trend, he observed, has intensified in recent years.
The negative reception of Cities: Skylines 2 led to a public apology and a planned "fan feedback summit." The game's first DLC was also delayed due to performance issues. The cancellation of Life By You resulted from a determination that the game couldn't reach the desired quality standards. Lilja acknowledged internal shortcomings in understanding certain development challenges.
