Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messages, But Other Asynchronous Features Enhanced
FromSoftware has confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign will not include the series' signature in-game messaging system. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki, is purely practical. The fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design of Nightreign, anticipated to feature shorter play sessions (around 40 minutes), leaves insufficient time for players to read and write messages.
The asynchronous messaging system, a hallmark of FromSoftware titles, has been instrumental in fostering community engagement. Players use it for helpful guidance, playful misdirection, or shared humor. However, this beloved feature will be absent from Nightreign. Ishizaki's comments to IGN Japan highlight the incompatibility of this system with the game's intended shorter, more intense gameplay experience.
While the messaging system is being removed, Nightreign will retain and enhance other asynchronous elements. The bloodstain mechanic, for example, will return, offering players even more information about past player deaths and the opportunity to loot their spectral remains.
FromSoftware's Vision: A "Compressed" RPG
The omission of the messaging system aligns with FromSoftware's vision for Nightreign: a more intense, multiplayer-focused experience than its predecessor. The game's three-day structure further supports this goal. Ishizaki describes the ambition as creating "a compressed RPG" packed with diverse content and minimal downtime.
Nightreign was revealed at The Game Awards 2024, targeting a 2025 release. A specific release date is yet to be announced by FromSoftware and Bandai Namco.
