Digital Foundry's Thomas Morgan has conducted an in-depth analysis of Bloodborne running on the ShadPS4 emulator, showcasing the significant strides made by modders in enhancing the game's performance and technical quality.
For his evaluation, Morgan utilized the ShadPS4 0.5.1 build by diegolix29, which is derived from a custom branch developed by raphaelthegreat. After testing multiple builds, he found this particular version to offer the most promising results on a system powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 5700X processor and a GeForce RTX 4080 GPU.
To address visual glitches, Morgan strongly recommended the installation of the Vertex Explosion Fix mod, which corrects issues with stretched or mispositioned polygons. Although this mod disables the option to customize the character's face at the start, it effectively eliminates these visual artifacts. Importantly, no other mods are necessary as the emulator comes equipped with a built-in menu for managing various enhancements. These include options for enabling 60 fps gameplay, boosting the resolution to 4K, and turning off chromatic aberration.
Morgan observed that Bloodborne maintained a 60 fps frame rate most of the time, despite experiencing occasional stutters. He also experimented with higher resolutions such as 1440p and 1800p, which enhanced image detail but led to performance degradation and increased instances of crashes. Consequently, he suggests that for optimal performance, Bloodborne should be run on the ShadPS4 emulator at either 1080p, matching the PS4's native resolution, or at 1152p.
In his concluding remarks, Morgan praised the ShadPS4 team for their groundbreaking work in PS4 emulation, noting that while Bloodborne performs admirably on the emulator, there remain some technical challenges to be addressed.
