Avowed: A Deep Dive into Complex Gameplay and Multiple Endings
Navigating Political Intrigue in The Living Lands
Obsidian Entertainment's Avowed offers players continuous opportunities to shape their character and influence the narrative. Game director Carrie Patel emphasizes that every decision, no matter how seemingly insignificant, contributes to the overall experience.
"It's about providing constant opportunities for players to express themselves and explore their character's inclinations," Patel explains. She further notes that Avowed encourages players to reflect on their engagement with the game, asking questions like, "When am I most engaged? When am I curious? What keeps my attention focused?"
Patel highlights that player choices and outcomes are directly tied to exploration and discovery within the rich world of Eora, particularly in The Living Lands, a region rife with political maneuvering. "I've enjoyed weaving together the narratives that connect these two worlds," she adds.
Players assume the role of an Aedyran Empire envoy, tasked with investigating a spiritual plague while simultaneously pursuing their own political ambitions. "Giving players compelling content to delve into—that's what makes for meaningful roleplay," Patel explains. "It's about who you want your character to be, and how the game's situations allow you to express that identity."
Beyond the intricate RPG mechanics, Avowed boasts strategic combat blending magic, swords, and firearms. "The available abilities and weapon choices drastically alter the gameplay experience with each playthrough," Patel confirms.
Furthermore, Patel confirmed to IGN the existence of numerous endings, each a unique combination of player choices. She stated, "We have a double-digit number of ending slides, and many different combinations are possible." She emphasizes, "True to Obsidian's style, your ending is a direct reflection of your choices throughout the game, shaped by the content you've encountered and your actions within it."
