Avowed's Success Spurs Talk of Expansions and Sequels
Following the successful launch of Avowed, Obsidian and Microsoft are reportedly pleased with sales figures. This positive reception has fueled speculation about future projects within the franchise. In a February 22, 2025 Bloomberg interview, Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel hinted at the possibility of expansions or a sequel.
While Obsidian hasn't officially announced any plans, Patel expressed a strong desire to continue working within the established world. She stated, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it." This suggests a keen interest in leveraging the existing foundation for future installments.
Navigating the Development Challenges

Patel also shared insights into the complex development journey of Avowed. The project, initiated in 2018 amidst Obsidian's acquisition by Microsoft, faced numerous hurdles. Initial plans included features later removed, such as a multiplayer component. A leadership change and game reboot in January 2021 further reshaped the project's trajectory.
Managing a large team presented significant challenges. Patel noted the difficulties of overseeing over 80 developers during a creative overhaul, stating, "Normally if you’re stepping back and reevaluating your creative direction...you would do that with a very small team." Ultimately, the team refocused on strengthening the narrative and lore, transitioning from an open world to open zones to enhance the game's overall quality.
Pillars of Eternity Tactics on the Horizon?

With Avowed successfully reviving the Pillars of Eternity franchise, Obsidian's sights are set on a new project: Pillars of Eternity Tactics. In a February 23, 2025 Twitch livestream, Pillars of Eternity Director Josh Sawyer confirmed internal interest in developing a tactics game for the franchise. However, he acknowledged the need to carefully consider scope, visual quality, and overall scale.
Sawyer also reiterated his commitment to developing Pillars of Eternity 3, but emphasized the need for a significantly larger budget, comparable to Baldur's Gate 3's $100 million investment, a substantial increase from the budget of Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire.
Avowed is currently available on Xbox Series X|S and PC. Stay tuned for further updates!
