Vampire Survivors, Balatro Shine at BAFTA Games Awards

Apr 19,2025 Author: Ellie

The BAFTA Games Awards concluded last night, celebrating some of the most notable achievements in gaming. Among the top winners were Balatro and Vampire Survivors, showcasing the impact of mobile and multiplatform games. However, the absence of platform-specific categories raises questions about visibility for mobile games.

While the BAFTAs may not have the extensive reach of Geoff Keighley's Game Awards, they are often considered more prestigious, if less glamorous. The 2024 BAFTA Games Awards did not feature specific mobile categories, yet we witnessed significant wins from major mobile releases over the past year.

Balatro, a roguelike deckbuilder, clinched the Debut Game award. This victory highlights the buzz around Localthunk's innovative game, though it also underscores the challenge for publishers seeking the next big indie hit.

Vampire Survivors, which won Best Game in 2023, was awarded Best Evolving Game this year. This accolade is particularly impressive given the competition from heavyweights like Diablo IV and Final Fantasy XIV Online.

What, no mobile?

The BAFTA Games Awards take a unique approach by not having platform-specific categories. This decision, made in 2019, means that even with successes from mobile and multiplatform titles like Vampire Survivors and Genshin Impact, the awards structure has remained unchanged.

In a past conversation, Luke Hebblethwaite from the BAFTAs game team explained that the organization believes games should compete equally, regardless of platform. This perspective is interesting, especially considering the significant role mobile platforms have played in the success of games like Balatro and Vampire Survivors.

While the lack of mobile-specific categories might be a point of contention, the reach and impact of mobile gaming are undeniable. Perhaps the recognition these games receive in broader categories can be seen as a testament to their quality and appeal across platforms.

That's just my take on it. If you're interested in diving deeper into mobile gaming discussions, don't miss the latest episode of the Pocket Gamer Podcast, where I join Will to explore all things mobile gaming and more.
