WWE 2K25: A Solid Evolution, But Is It Enough?
2K's WWE series, revitalized in 2022, continues its iterative improvement strategy with WWE 2K25. Promising additions like "The Island," a revamped story mode, and a new "Bloodline Rules" match type, were unfortunately unavailable for preview. My hands-on time focused on the core gameplay and the updated Showcase Mode.
The Showcase Mode, centered around The Bloodline, offers three match types: recreating history, creating history, and altering history. Experiencing these – including recreating Nia Jax's 2024 Queen of the Ring victory and altering a Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins match – provided unique and engaging scenarios for WWE fans. A significant improvement over previous iterations, though some minor issues remain.
A key improvement is the reduction of the jarring "Slingshot" system (frequent cuts to real-life footage) from previous years. Key moments are now recreated in-engine, resulting in a smoother, more immersive experience. While not entirely eliminated, the reliance on this system is significantly reduced. However, complete control was still removed during the final moments of my Nia Jax match, an area that could use further refinement. I prefer more player agency during pivotal moments.
The checklist system, a previous point of contention, returns but with refinements. Optional timed objectives offer cosmetic rewards without punishing failure, a welcome change. The ability to alter historical match outcomes is a standout addition, offering fresh gameplay for dedicated fans.

Core gameplay remains largely unchanged, retaining the successful mechanics of WWE 2K24. However, notable additions include the return of chain wrestling, adding strategic depth to the early stages of matches, and the revamped submission system (a mini-game, optionally disableable). Weapon throwing returns with expanded environments and an impressive roster of weapons, including Logan Paul's Prime Hydration bottle. The inclusion of intergender matches and a roster exceeding 300 wrestlers significantly expands gameplay options.

A new "Underground" match type, a ropeless exhibition match in a Fight Club-esque setting, promises further innovation. A full match and detailed explanation will be available later.
WWE 2K25 builds upon a strong foundation with incremental but smart improvements. While the impact of the unpreviewed features remains to be seen, the current iteration suggests a solid, if not revolutionary, evolution of the series.
