Sony's Spider-Man universe isn't over yet. Reports indicate the studio is developing a new film featuring the live-action debut of a highly popular character.
Despite Marvel's prominent role in the Spider-Man franchise, Sony is forging ahead. Recent rumors point to a new Spider-Man movie, excitingly introducing a beloved character to the live-action world.
While Marvel prepares for a fourth Spider-Man installment, Sony is reportedly pursuing a different path. Industry insider Jeff Sneider, on The Hot Mic podcast, revealed Sony is actively casting an actor for Miles Morales in their next Spider-Man film. Whether Miles will get his own standalone film or appear in a related project remains uncertain, but the news is promising.
Miles Morales first appeared in Sony's acclaimed animated Spider-Man films, voiced by Shameik Moore. His popularity, coupled with the animated movies' success and awards, makes a live-action adaptation almost inevitable. Producer Amy Pascal previously confirmed Sony's interest, and now it seems those plans are underway. While a standalone film is possible, inclusion in another movie within Sony's Spider-Man Universe is more likely. Speculation suggests a debut in a currently unannounced Spider-Man film or the rumored Spider-Gwen movie. Sneider didn't name potential actors, only stating Sony is seeking the perfect fit. However, fans suggest Shameik Moore (due to his voice work and expressed interest) and Hailee Steinfeld (who voiced Gwen and also expressed interest) as strong contenders.
Sony's Spider-Man films have been successful, but the same can't be said for the rest of its Spider-Man Universe. Beyond the Venom movies, projects like Madame Web and Morbius underperformed at the box office. However, a live-action Spider-Verse film, especially one centered on Miles, could revitalize the franchise, provided the right team is assembled. Sony's animated success demonstrates their capability, but fans remain wary of their live-action efforts, fearing a mishandling of this beloved character. Some even suggest Marvel would be a better fit. Ultimately, fans hope Sony chooses the right creative team to do Miles Morales justice. The wait continues to see how Sony proceeds and if they can overcome past setbacks to deliver a film that meets high expectations.
