Stormgate's Early Access debut on Steam has sparked considerable controversy among fans and Kickstarter backers. The game, aiming to be a spiritual successor to StarCraft II, raised over $2.3 million on Kickstarter but faces criticism over its monetization strategy.
Backers Feeling Betrayed by Monetization
The initial enthusiasm surrounding Stormgate, fueled by its pedigree and Kickstarter success, has been tempered by the implementation of microtransactions. Backers who pledged $60 for the "Ultimate" package expected complete early access content, a promise deemed unfulfilled. Individual campaign chapters cost $10, while co-op characters command the same price – twice that of StarCraft II. This has left many backers feeling misled, particularly given their substantial financial contributions. The addition of a new character, Warz, on launch day, excluded from Kickstarter rewards, further exacerbated the situation. One Steam reviewer, Aztraeuz, succinctly summarized the sentiment: "You can take the developer out of Blizzard, but you can’t take Blizzard out of the developer... Why are there pre-day 1 microtransactions that we don’t own?"
Frost Giant Studios Responds
In response to the backlash, Frost Giant Studios acknowledged the misunderstanding regarding Kickstarter bundle content. They announced that "Ultimate Founder’s Pack" backers and above will receive the next paid Hero for free, excluding the already released Warz. This gesture, however, hasn't fully appeased disgruntled players.
Beyond Monetization: Gameplay Concerns
Beyond the monetization issues, Stormgate faces criticism regarding its visuals, limited campaign features, unit interactions, and AI challenge. While the core RTS gameplay displays potential, these shortcomings have contributed to a "Mixed" rating on Steam. Despite these criticisms, the game's underlying potential remains, particularly with regards to future improvements in areas like storyline and visuals.
