The beloved Dungeons & Dragons show, Critical Role, is on the cusp of unveiling its inaugural major video game, with CEO Travis Willingham hinting that an announcement could be imminent, stating it could come "any day."
In a recent interview with Business Insider, the team shared their expansive vision for the future. Although the game's title and its precise connection to the Critical Role universe remain under wraps, Willingham emphasized that the development team is diligently working on the project. He described the upcoming video game as an experience where players will "actually be getting their hand on the stick and controlling the outcome of the story, changing what might be possible from not just some of their favorite characters, but new offerings in the world of Exandria."

Since its start, the D&D show has evolved into a vast universe, with a notable success being its Amazon Prime Video spinoff, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina.
The forthcoming Critical Role video game will complement the show's other ventures without necessarily being a direct continuation of them. In a December 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Willingham mentioned that the team was in "active pursuit" of developing a video game spinoff, indicating they were "starting to come to the end of a long road that we’ve been undertaking for the last couple of years." It remains uncertain whether the game will follow one of the group’s existing campaigns or introduce an entirely new narrative within the Critical Role world.
The team anticipated making an announcement by the end of 2024 or early 2025. Now, three months into the new year, it seems that an announcement is indeed on the horizon.
Reflecting on their strategy, Willingham told Rolling Stone, "Those collaborations we’ve had with various partners have been little toe dips in the pool just to see how it feels. You know, there’s a lot of upheaval in the interactive space right now. And we’ve seen studios sort of bear and weather those strains. It’s trying to become smarter about it and find out how we might fit into that larger ecosystem."
