Sony Has Established a New AAA PlayStation Studio

Sony's Secret Los Angeles Studio: A New AAA PlayStation Game in Development

Sony Interactive Entertainment has quietly established a new AAA game studio in Los Angeles, California. This marks their 20th first-party studio and adds to PlayStation's already impressive lineup of development houses. The studio's existence was revealed through a recent job posting for a Project Senior Producer.

The Los Angeles-based studio is currently shrouded in secrecy, but it's confirmed to be developing a groundbreaking, original AAA IP for the PlayStation 5. The news has generated considerable excitement among PlayStation fans, who eagerly anticipate updates on upcoming titles from established studios like Santa Monica Studio, Naughty Dog, and Insomniac Games. Sony's recent acquisitions of studios like Housemarque, Bluepoint Games, and Firesprite have also fueled this anticipation.

Two Leading Theories Regarding the Studio's Origins:

Several theories speculate on the origins of this new team. One prominent theory points to a spin-off team from Bungie, formed following the layoffs of 155 Bungie employees in July 2024. These employees transitioned to Sony Interactive Entertainment, and some believe they are now part of this new Los Angeles studio, potentially working on Bungie's "Gummybears" incubation project.

Another strong contender is the team led by industry veteran Jason Blundell, formerly co-founder of Deviation Games. Deviation Games, which was developing a AAA PS5 title, unfortunately closed in March 2024. However, many former Deviation Games employees joined PlayStation in May 2024, forming a new team under Blundell's leadership. Given the longer gestation period of Blundell's team, it's plausible that this is the studio revealed in the recent job posting. Speculation suggests their project might be a continuation or a reboot of Deviation Games' previous work.

While details remain scarce, the confirmation of another first-party PlayStation studio developing a AAA title is welcome news for fans. Although any official announcements about the studio's project may be years away, the anticipation is already building.
