Sony addressed widespread user frustration following a recent PS5 update that introduced intrusive promotional content to the console's home screen.
Sony Addresses PS5 Ad Glitch
User Backlash Over Unexpected Ads
Sony announced on Twitter (X) that a technical issue affecting the PS5's Official News feature has been rectified. The company stated, "A tech error with the Official News feature on the PS5 console has since been resolved. There have been no changes to the way game news is displayed on PS5."
Prior to this announcement, Sony faced significant criticism for an update that filled the PS5 home screen with ads, promotional artwork, and outdated news. The update, seemingly rolled out gradually over several weeks, caused considerable annoyance among users who reported a substantial portion of their home screen being dominated by promotional headlines and artwork.
PlayStation 5 home screens now reportedly feature art and news tailored to the user's currently selected game. Despite Sony's response, some users remain unconvinced, labeling the change a "terrible decision." One user commented, "Checked my other games; they're all affected. Most background images are replaced with these awful news thumbnails, covering the unique art that gave each game its own feel. Terrible decision, and I hope they change it or add an opt-out option. At least with the 'Explore' tab, I could ignore it; now it's everywhere." Another user added, "It's bizarre people are defending this. Who wants to pay $500 to be bombarded with unwanted ads?"
