Pikachu Manhole Cover: A Unique Addition to the Nintendo Museum
The upcoming Nintendo Museum in Kyoto's Uji city will feature a delightful surprise: a Pikachu-themed Poké Lid! These aren't your average manhole covers; Poké Lids, or Pokéfuta, are artistically designed manhole covers featuring various Pokémon characters, becoming a popular sight across Japan.

The Nintendo Museum's Poké Lid showcases Pikachu and a Poké Ball emerging from a retro Game Boy, a charming nod to the franchise's origins. The pixelated design evokes the nostalgia of early gaming.

The Poké Lid phenomenon isn't limited to the Nintendo Museum. Many Japanese cities utilize these colorful covers to enhance their streetscapes and attract tourists. Examples include Fukuoka's Alolan Dugtrio Poké Lid and Ojiya City's Magikarp series. Adding to the fun, many Poké Lids serve as PokéStops in Pokémon GO.

This initiative is part of Japan's Pokémon Local Acts campaign, using Pokémon to promote regional tourism and economies. With over 250 Poké Lids installed, the campaign continues to grow. It began in Kagoshima Prefecture in December 2018 with Eevee-themed lids and expanded nationwide in July 2019.

The Nintendo Museum, opening October 2nd, celebrates Nintendo's history, from playing cards to global gaming giant. Visitors are challenged to locate the Pikachu Poké Lid during their visit. Learn more about the museum in our related article!
