Nexus Mods, a popular platform for game modifications, is facing backlash after removing over 500 mods for Marvel's Avengers in a single month. The controversy centers on the removal of two mods that replaced Captain America's head with images of Joe Biden and Donald Trump.
The platform's owner, TheDarkOne, clarified on Reddit that both mods were removed simultaneously to prevent accusations of political bias. Despite this, TheDarkOne reports receiving numerous threats and abusive messages following the removals.
"We took down the Biden mod the same day as the Trump mod to be fair. Yet, YouTube personalities remain strangely silent," TheDarkOne stated. TheDarkOne further revealed that the platform has been subjected to death threats and other forms of harassment.
This isn't the first time Nexus Mods has faced criticism over mod removals. A similar incident occurred in 2022 when a Spider-Man Remastered mod replacing rainbow flags was removed. The platform's stance on inclusivity and its rejection of content deemed discriminatory were explicitly stated at that time.
TheDarkOne concluded by stating that Nexus Mods will not engage with those who object to their moderation policies. The situation highlights the ongoing tension between freedom of expression and platform moderation policies within the gaming community.
