Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy, is back in the game development arena, despite previous retirement plans. His latest endeavor aims to create a spiritual successor to Final Fantasy VI.

A New Chapter After Fantasian
Following the successful release of Fantasian Neo Dimension, initially launched in 2021, Sakaguchi revealed in an interview with The Verge his desire to craft another title. While he initially intended Fantasian to be his swan song, the positive experience working with his team prompted a change of heart. He now seeks to develop a game that serves as a "successor to Final Fantasy VI," a project he describes as "part two of my farewell note."

The team behind Fantasian will reunite for this new project, aiming to create a game that blends classic elements with fresh innovation.
Development Update and Speculation
In a 2024 Famitsu interview, Sakaguchi confirmed the project's progress, stating that scripting concluded a year prior and completion is anticipated within two years. The June 2024 trademark filing for "FANTASIAN DARK AGE" by Mistwalker fueled speculation of a Fantasian sequel, though this remains unconfirmed. The new game will likely follow the fantasy RPG style of his previous works.

Reunion with Square Enix
The collaboration with Square Enix for the multi-platform release of FANTASIAN Neo Dimension (December 2024) on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch marked a significant reunion for Sakaguchi. Initially a 2021 Apple Arcade exclusive and critically acclaimed, the enhanced version signifies a full circle moment for the creator who began his career at Square (now Square Enix). Despite this collaboration, Sakaguchi maintains his focus on new projects, stating he now views himself as a consumer rather than solely a creator, and has no intention of revisiting previous Final Fantasy titles.

Sakaguchi's journey from the inception of Final Fantasy to his current independent pursuits, culminating in this new, highly anticipated project, continues to captivate fans worldwide.
