HBO is reportedly in advanced negotiations with acclaimed actor John Lithgow, known for his role as Lord Farquaad in Shrek, to portray the iconic Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in their upcoming Harry Potter series. While HBO remains tight-lipped, Variety reports that a deal is imminent. This follows previous speculation in November naming Mark Rylance as a frontrunner for the Dumbledore role.
"We understand the considerable interest surrounding this project and the resulting speculation," an HBO spokesperson stated. "We will only confirm casting decisions once contracts are finalized."
Lithgow's extensive filmography includes roles in The World According to Garp, Terms of Endearment, Footloose, Dexter, and The Crown, showcasing his versatility and range.

Despite numerous reports suggesting progress, the full cast remains undisclosed. HBO is actively seeking actors for the roles of Harry, Hermione, and Ron, while Paapa Essiedu is reportedly attached to play Severus Snape.
The series will prioritize British talent, mirroring the films. This is perhaps unsurprising given J.K. Rowling's reported involvement in the casting process.
Announced in April 2023, the Harry Potter adaptation promises a faithful and more detailed exploration of the beloved novels than previously seen in the film franchise. The series will be helmed by Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod (of Succession and Game of Thrones fame) as producers and writers.
