Cross-Play: Civilization VII supports cross-play, but with limitations. Players require an active 2K account linked to their chosen platforms. Cross-play generally functions seamlessly across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, macOS, and Linux, offering standard map sizes and player counts. However, Nintendo Switch users face restrictions. Due to hardware limitations, the Switch version supports smaller map sizes and fewer players (up to four in Antiquity and Exploration Ages, six in the Modern Age) compared to other platforms. Standard or larger maps are unavailable for Switch players in cross-play.
In short, cross-play is largely smooth, except when a Switch console is involved, in which case the aforementioned limitations apply. While the Switch version is playable, its capabilities should be considered, especially in online multiplayer.
Cross-Progression: Unlike the complexities of cross-play, Civilization VII's cross-progression is straightforward, requiring only an active 2K account. Progress is tracked across all linked platforms, preventing players from restarting on each system. This feature, recognizing modern gaming habits, is available at launch, unlike in Civilization VI where it was a post-release addition. Whether playing on a Steam Deck, Switch, PC, or console, your progress is consistently saved.
Civilization VII launches February 11th.
