Application Description
Investigating vehicle collisions requires thorough data collection. The CrashScan app, used with an OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth adapter, provides a powerful tool for accessing and interpreting data from a vehicle's Event Data Recorder (EDR), often called a "black box," where supported. CrashScan helps investigators identify, capture, and analyze stored accident data, aiding in insurance claim validation and liability assessment.
Vehicle Support (EDR & Full System Diagnostic Scan)
CrashScan supports over 3000 vehicle year/make/model combinations internationally. Check support for your specific vehicle here: https://collisionsciences.ca/reports/check_support/
Contextual Accident Reports
A successful CrashScan provides detailed insights into impact severity, orientation (front, rear, or side), and crucial contextual information, including:
- Impact classification (minor, moderate, or severe)
- EDR trigger threshold details
- 5 seconds of pre-crash data (speed, brake/accelerator pedal use, steering)
- Number of occupants and seatbelt status
- Estimated repair cost
- Likelihood of structural crush damage
- Injury risk thresholds (whiplash, injury duration)
- G-force context compared to daily activities
*Injury risk algorithms utilize stored acceleration values, scientific literature, and databases like the National Automotive Sampling System (NASS).

Privacy Legislation Regarding EDR Data
Canada: Currently, no specific legislation governs EDR data; it's considered diagnostic and non-private. However, obtaining consent from vehicle owners is a best practice among insurers.
United States: The federal Driver Privacy Act of 2015, along with statutes in seventeen states (Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington), regulates EDR data access. These laws generally require consent from the vehicle owner or policyholder before downloading data, with certain exceptions.
End-User Consent
By installing the CrashScan app, you consent to its installation, future updates, and data collection practices as outlined in our privacy statement. You can withdraw consent at any time by uninstalling the app. The app may communicate with Collision Science's servers for functionality and usage metrics, affect app-related preferences, and collect information.
