GameCube Fans Excited for Switch 2 Due to New Nintendo Filings

Excitement is building among Nintendo fans as new filings suggest the possibility of a new GameCube controller designed for use with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. The controller, hinted at in a recent FCC filing by Nintendo for a "game controller" compatible with the Switch 2, is believed to be a wireless Bluetooth device. Enthusiasts on the internet, particularly on Famiboards, have dug into the details, and one image from the filing shows a label location that aligns perfectly with the back of a GameCube controller, right behind the C-Stick.

While some speculate this could be a new version of the Switch Pro Controller, the current buzz suggests it might be used with Nintendo's Switch Online subscription service, which already supports wireless classic controllers for retro gaming. This has sparked hopes of a GameCube library becoming available on Nintendo Switch Online. Fans have been eagerly awaiting GameCube classics on the Switch, but until now, Nintendo has only included games from the NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy on its subscription service. Could this be the moment when GameCube games make a grand return via the Nintendo Switch 2?

Nintendo Consoles

The Nintendo Switch 2 was unveiled earlier in January with a teaser trailer that confirmed its backwards compatibility features and the addition of a second USB-C port. However, many details, such as other game titles and the function of the mysterious new Joy-Con button, remain undisclosed. The Joy-Con mouse theory has gained some traction among fans.

Last month, a Nintendo patent hinted that the Switch 2's Joy-Con controllers might be attachable upside down. The Switch 2 will utilize gyro mechanics, much like modern smartphones without screen locks. Unlike the original Switch, which used rails to lock Joy-Cons in place, the new model will employ magnets, allowing the controllers to be attached to either side of the console. This flexibility could lead to innovative gameplay mechanics and give players the freedom to customize button and port placement.

Analysts predict that the Switch 2 will be priced around $400, though some believe Nintendo might aim for $500. June has been floated as a potential release month. While many details about the Switch 2 remain under wraps, Nintendo has scheduled a Direct presentation for April 2 to shed more light on the console.

As we await more information, fans can enjoy a taste of GameCube nostalgia with Metroid Prime Remastered, currently available on the Nintendo Switch.
