Application Description
Unlock your car's diagnostic capabilities with Piston, transforming your mobile device into a powerful car scanner. If your Check Engine Light (MIL) is on, Piston allows you to delve into the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) and Freeze Frame data, pinpointing the issue with precision. This essential tool aids in identifying and resolving problems swiftly.
To get started, you'll need an ELM327-based adapter, either Bluetooth or WiFi, to connect to your vehicle's OBD2 socket. Piston simplifies the setup process, offering step-by-step guidance accessible from the Home page post-installation or through Settings anytime.
With Piston, you gain the ability to:
- Read and clear Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) as defined by the OBD2 standard
- Examine Freeze Frame data, capturing sensor data at the moment an issue is detected by the ECU
- Access real-time data from vehicle sensors
- Monitor the status of Readiness Monitors to ensure your emission control devices are functioning correctly
- Keep a local history of the DTCs you've read
- Log in to save DTCs in the cloud for future reference
- View charts of sensor readouts for detailed analysis
- Export real-time sensor data to a file for further examination
- Check your car's VIN number
- Explore details of your vehicle's ECUs, including the OBD protocol and PIDs number
Some of these advanced features are part of our Premium offering, available through a one-time in-app purchase to unlock all functionalities without any recurring subscriptions.
Piston requires a separate ELM327-based device to function as a car scanner and is fully compatible with both OBD-II (also known as OBDII or OBD2) and EOBD standards. Vehicles sold in the USA since 1996 are mandated to support OBD2, while in the European Union, EOBD has been required for petrol vehicles since 2001 and diesel vehicles since 2004. For Australia and New Zealand, OBD2 compliance is mandatory for petrol cars from 2006 and diesel cars from 2007.
Please note, Piston can only access data that your vehicle supports and provides through the OBD2 standard.
