Marvel Rivals Update Removes Mods for Season 1

Marvel Rivals Season 1 Update Cracks Down on Mods

Marvel Rivals' Season 1 update has reportedly disabled custom-made mods, a popular feature among players since the game's launch. While not explicitly announced, the update effectively prevents the use of these modifications, reverting characters to their default appearances.

The January 10, 2025, Season 1 launch introduced significant content, including the Fantastic Four as playable heroes (Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman initially, with Thing and Human Torch to follow), a new Battle Pass, updated maps, and a new Doom Match mode. However, the simultaneous suppression of modding has disappointed many players.

NetEase Games, the developer, has consistently maintained that mod usage violates the game's terms of service, regardless of whether the mods are purely cosmetic. Previous actions against individual mods, including a Donald Trump-themed Captain America skin, foreshadowed this broader move. The Season 1 update likely employs hash checking—a data verification technique—to prevent mod functionality.

This anti-modding measure isn't surprising, given NetEase's stated policy and prior actions. While some players mourn the loss of customizable content and unreleased mods, the business rationale is clear. As a free-to-play game, Marvel Rivals relies on in-app purchases of character bundles containing skins, sprays, and other cosmetics. The availability of free cosmetic mods could severely undermine the game's revenue model. Therefore, eliminating mod use is a strategic decision to protect the game's profitability.
