Xbox Keystone Console Details Emerge from Unseen Patent

A recently unearthed patent offers a glimpse into the design of the cancelled Xbox Keystone console. While previously hinted at by Phil Spencer, the Keystone's release remains uncertain.

Microsoft explored various strategies during the Xbox One era to re-engage lapsed fans. This included the launch of Xbox Game Pass, a service that continues to thrive on Xbox Series X/S. Prior to Game Pass, Games with Gold provided free games, a program discontinued in 2023 alongside the introduction of Game Pass's tiered subscription model. Since the inception of Game Pass, Microsoft has explored a dedicated console for cloud-streaming Game Pass content. A newly discovered patent reveals this device's potential design and functionality.

Windows Central recently uncovered details of the Xbox Keystone, envisioned as a streaming device akin to Apple TV or Amazon Fire TV Stick. The patent includes images showcasing a circular top design reminiscent of the Xbox Series S. The front features an Xbox power button and a rectangular port, likely USB. The rear panel would have included Ethernet, HDMI, and a presumably power-supply oval port. A side-mounted button facilitated controller pairing, while ventilation slots are present on the back and bottom. A circular base elevated the device for optimal airflow.

Why the Xbox Keystone's Cancellation?

Microsoft has been conducting xCloud tests since 2019, a process likely intended to optimize the Keystone's performance. The projected price point for the Keystone was $99-$129, a target Microsoft couldn't achieve. This suggests that the technology necessary for xCloud-based Game Pass streaming exceeded the budget. Considering Xbox consoles are often sold at cost or at a loss, manufacturing the Keystone for under $129 proved challenging. However, with technology costs typically decreasing over time, a future release remains a possibility.

Given Phil Spencer's past mentions, the Keystone's existence wasn't a closely guarded secret. While seemingly abandoned, the project's underlying concept could influence future Xbox initiatives.
