The highly anticipated Suikoden I & II HD Remaster took five years to develop, a testament to the developers' dedication to creating a faithful and high-quality remaster of these classic RPGs. This article delves into the development process and the exciting future planned for the Suikoden franchise.
A Five-Year Journey to Faithfulness

Initially slated for a 2023 release, the Suikoden I & II HD Remaster (hereafter referred to as Suikoden 1 & 2 HDR) underwent a significant delay, ultimately taking five years to complete. In a March 4, 2025 interview with Dengeki Online, the development team revealed the reasons behind this extended timeframe. Their commitment was to deliver a remaster that truly honored the original games. Towards the end of development, extensive debugging revealed the need for a thorough review, leading to the postponement.
Game Director Tatsuya Ogushi explained, "Rather than rushing, we prioritized understanding the situation. After discussions with [IP and Game Director] Takahiro Sakiyama, focusing on quality, it became clear that many areas required further work, and we needed to address them thoroughly."
Reviving a Legacy: More Than Just a Remaster

The Suikoden 1 & 2 HDR project wasn't merely a standalone remaster; it served as the cornerstone for reviving the entire Suikoden franchise. Series Producer Rui Naito emphasized this point, stating, "The most important thing was that this was the first step in reviving the Suikoden IP, so we needed to make sure we didn't stumble here. So, ‘make it solid’ was the basic order." He further explained that releasing a subpar product at the outset would have jeopardized the entire revitalization effort.
Gensou Suikoden Live: Unveiling the Future

The March 4, 2025 Gensou Suikoden Live event showcased Konami's ambitious plans for the franchise's future. Naito considered this live event the second step in the revitalization process, acknowledging the uncertainty of how many steps it would ultimately take. He highlighted the dedication to delivering high-quality projects, referencing the ongoing work on the mobile game Suikoden: STAR LEAP and the Suikoden II anime adaptation. Naito concluded, "After we have successfully delivered this accumulation, I think we will be able to think about what to do next."
Konami announced Suikoden: The Anime, an anime adaptation of Suikoden II, produced by Konami Animation. Additionally, the mobile game Genso Suikoden: STAR LEAP was revealed, with teaser trailers released for both projects. Specific release dates remain unannounced.
With numerous projects underway, Konami is committed to returning the beloved Suikoden franchise to the forefront.
