Splatoon 4 Whispers Follow the End of an Era
Nintendo's announcement that regular content updates for Splatoon 3 will cease has ignited speculation about a potential sequel. While the game isn't entirely abandoned – holiday events like Splatoween and Frosty Fest will continue, along with occasional weapon adjustments and balance patches – the news has fans buzzing.
The official Twitter (now X) announcement stated: "After 2 INK-credible years of Splatoon 3, regular updates will come to a close. Don't worry! Splatoween, Frosty Fest, Spring Fest, and Summer Nights will continue with some returning themes! Updates for weapon adjustments will be released as needed. Big Run, Eggstra Work, and Monthly Challenges will continue for the time being."
This announcement followed the September 16th conclusion of *Splatoon 3*'s Grand Festival, commemorated with a video showcasing past Splatfests. Nintendo's closing message, "Thanks for holding down the Splatlands with us, it's been a blast!", added to the sense of closure.
Splatoon 3's two-year run ended on September 9th. The cessation of active development has reignited rumors of a Splatoon 4. Some players believe in-game locations during the Grand Festival hinted at a new city for the next installment.
Responding to images of a futuristic city, one fan commented, "Doesn't look like Inkopolis. Perhaps the setting of Splatoon 4?" Others remain skeptical, suggesting the location is simply a variation of Splatoon 3's Splatville.
Although nothing official exists regarding Splatoon 4, speculation has been rife for months. Reports suggest Nintendo has begun development on a new Splatoon title for the Switch. With the Grand Festival marking the end of Splatoon 3's major Splatfests, many believe Splatoon 4 is imminent.
Past Splatoon Final Fests have influenced subsequent sequels, leading some to predict a "Past, Present, or Future" theme for Splatoon 4, based on Splatoon 3's final event. However, until Nintendo makes an official announcement, the future of the Splatoon franchise remains shrouded in ink-stained mystery.
