Game Freak, renowned for its Pokémon franchise, has unveiled a new title, Pand Land, a captivating adventure RPG. This Japanese mobile release (Android and iOS) sees players exploring a vibrant, expansive world in search of treasure. This isn't Game Freak's first foray outside Pokémon; prior standalone titles like Little Town Hero and HarmoKnight have garnered significant player interest.
Recent Pokémon entries have faced criticism regarding shorter development cycles and perceived impacts on quality. However, Game Freak simultaneously launched Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and the Gen 9 DLC (Hidden Treasure of Area Zero) since early 2022, with another major Pokémon game in development. (Note that Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl were outsourced to ILCA.)
Pand Land, a refreshing departure, allows Game Freak creative freedom. Players assume the role of an expedition captain, uncovering treasures in Pandoland's vast, oceanic landscape. The game promotes relaxed exploration, alongside combat and dungeon-crawling, playable solo or with friends in multiplayer mode.
Pand Land's Current Japan-Only Release
Currently, an international release date remains unannounced. However, Game Freak's evident pride in the project suggests future global availability isn't impossible. In the official announcement from publisher WonderPlanet, Game Freak development director Yuji Saito emphasized the game's ambition: "We've been working hard to create a game that takes the scale of a console game and makes it easy and simple to play."
Pokémon fans can rest assured; Pand Land's development hasn't impacted the highly anticipated Pokémon Legends: Z-A, slated for release next year. While details remain scarce, the predecessor's popularity generates considerable excitement.
