Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons: A Potential Computer Mouse Mode?
Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons may offer an unconventional feature: the ability to function as computer mice. While the practicality of this mouse-like mode for game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.
The evidence comes from Famiboards user LiC, who previously accessed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has fueled numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024.
In early January 2025, LiC revealed further findings: customs manifests mentioning polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" and intended for "game console handles." The "mouse soles" designation, typically used for the bottom of computer mice, strongly implies a potential mouse functionality for the Switch 2 Joy-Cons.
Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were referenced. These numbers haven't been found in public component databases, suggesting they are new, unreleased products. The listed size, 90 x 90mm, seems large enough to cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, though likely requiring trimming during assembly.
Not a First for Handhelds
While novel for Nintendo, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented. Lenovo's Legion GO, released in 2023, already incorporates this functionality in its right controller, which transforms into a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic piece to optimize its surface glide.
The Legion GO also features magnetic controller rails—another rumored feature of the Switch 2. These similarities might offer a preview of Nintendo's hybrid console approach.
