The upcoming Marvel's Blade reboot has faced numerous setbacks, fueling speculation about its release. However, recent developments offer a renewed sense of optimism.
Five years after the initial announcement, the film remains unreleased, leading to considerable criticism of Marvel's handling of the project. Yet, hope persists. Will Blade finally make it to the big screen?
Following a string of negative updates, the production has received some positive news. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project isn't being shelved. Initially conceived as a period piece, the reboot is now shifting to a modern setting. While plot details are scarce, a script rewrite is planned for the summer, coinciding with the search for a new director.
Recent reports suggested the project had returned to the drawing board due to dissatisfaction from key figures, dashing the hopes of many fans. However, the ongoing script rewrite, targeted for completion by summer's end, offers a glimmer of hope. The team is actively seeking a replacement for director Yann Demange, who departed after nearly two years. Successful completion of these changes could pave the way for a theatrical release. However, the rewrites might significantly alter the plot.
The original concept envisioned a 1920s period setting, centering on Blade's daughter rather than Blade himself. Mia Goth, as Lilith, was slated as the vampire antagonist targeting Blade's daughter. While the comic books feature two versions of Lilith (Dracula's daughter and the Mother of Demons), the film's portrayal remained unspecified. The modern setting shift suggests substantial narrative changes.
Directorial changes stemmed from concerns about directorial fit. Bassam Tariq's departure is reportedly due to this. Star Mahershala Ali, provided with a list of directors by Marvel, undertook his own search for the ideal candidate. This search focused largely on filmmakers without prior major studio experience, presenting a unique challenge. Ali's vision for the reboot—described as "his Black Panther"—underlines his long-term commitment. Mia Goth remains attached, though her role's potential alteration is unknown. Delroy Lindo and Aaron Pierre are no longer involved, departing after the 2023 actors' and writers' strike. The current release date remains November 2025, but this is subject to change.
The anticipated release date is currently set for November 7, 2025.
