A new Street Fighter movie has chosen its director, and it's none other than Kitao Sakurai, known for his work on the quirky comedy show, The Eric Andre Show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sakurai will helm the latest film adaptation of Street Fighter, produced by Legendary Entertainment.
Capcom, the game's creator, is said to be "deeply involved" in this project, which is already slated for a release on March 20, 2026. This marks yet another attempt to bring the iconic fighting game franchise to the big screen, following the memorable 1994 film featuring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the late Raul Julia as M. Bison—a film that, despite its critical reception at the time, has become a cult classic.
While casting details remain under wraps, fans can likely anticipate seeing their beloved Street Fighter characters on screen. Initially, directors Danny and Michael Philippou, known for Talk to Me, were set to direct but left the project last summer. Sakurai's involvement hints at a shift towards a more absurdist tone for the film, which, given the game's often cartoonish elements, could be an exciting direction.
In the meantime, fans can dive into the latest installment, Street Fighter 6, which recently introduced Mai Shiranui as a new fighter. For more details, check out our comprehensive review of Street Fighter 6 here.
