1047 Games, the creators of the popular "Halo meets Portal" shooter, Splitgate, have announced a sequel: Splitgate 2, launching in 2025. This announcement, accompanied by a cinematic trailer, promises a fresh take on the fast-paced arena shooter while retaining familiar elements.
The sequel, built using Unreal Engine 5 and remaining free-to-play, aims for longevity, focusing on a "deep and satisfying gameplay loop." Developers emphasize a reimagined portal mechanic, aiming for skillful portal use to be rewarding without being mandatory for success. While gameplay details are scarce, a new faction system featuring three distinct factions – Aeros, Meridian, and Sabrask – each offering unique playstyles, is confirmed. The game will not, however, adopt a hero shooter model.
Splitgate 2 will be available on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One. A sneak peek at gameplay is promised at Gamescom 2024. The trailer showcases new maps, weapons, and the return of dual-wielding, features confirmed to be present in the final game.
While lacking a single-player campaign, Splitgate 2 will offer a mobile companion app with comics to expand the game's lore, character cards, and a faction quiz. This app aims to provide a deeper narrative experience for those interested in the game's story. The three factions, Aeros (dashing), Meridian (time manipulation), and Sabrask (brute force), offer diverse gameplay options within the core arena shooter framework.
