James Gunn, the head of DC Studios, is known for frequently casting his friends in his projects. Now, an actress from Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy has confirmed discussions with Gunn about a role in the upcoming DC Universe.
The DC Universe aims to launch a successful shared universe of DC characters, learning from the shortcomings of the previous DC Extended Universe (DCEU). While the DCEU had successes, inconsistencies and studio interference hampered its overall coherence. Warner Bros. hopes Gunn, known for his Guardians of the Galaxy films, can bring a more unified vision to the DCU, potentially including familiar faces.
According to Agents of Fandom, Pom Klementieff, who played Mantis in Guardians of the Galaxy, revealed at San Antonio's Superhero Comic Con that she's discussed a specific DCU role with Gunn. While she wouldn't disclose details, she confirmed Gunn has a particular character in mind for her.
I just want to keep working with James, so we’re going to keep trying to find ways to do that. \[...\] Yes, we’ve been talking about one specific character, but I can’t talk about that right now.
Klementieff also shared her positive experience working with Gunn on Guardians of the Galaxy, expressing her excitement about joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe and her gratitude for the opportunity. With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 concluding with the team's disbandment, she remains open to reprising her role as Mantis in the future.
I'm always open to it, I love the character. I'm sure the fans would love to see it, but I don't know. It depends on the project.
Gunn subsequently confirmed Klementieff's comments on Threads, clarifying that the role is not in his upcoming Superman film. He confirmed discussions about a different, unspecified DC character.
The practice of Gunn casting familiar actors, including his brother and wife, has drawn criticism from some. However, many filmmakers utilize similar casting practices, and the ultimate success hinges on the suitability of the actors for their respective roles. Ultimately, Klementieff's performance should speak for itself.
The Guardians of the Galaxy films are streaming on Disney+.
