Sony and the game developer Santa Monica Studio have unveiled the exciting Dark Odyssey collection, a new update for God of War Ragnarök that is set to launch next week. This update brings a host of in-game equipment themed around one of the franchise's most iconic outfits, offering players a chance to enhance their gaming experience with stylish new cosmetics.
In a detailed PlayStation.Blog post, Sony shared its comprehensive plans to celebrate the 20th anniversary of God of War. The highlight of these celebrations is undoubtedly the Dark Odyssey update, which will be available to all God of War Ragnarök players on both PlayStation 5 and PC at no additional cost. The update is scheduled to roll out on March 20.
The Dark Odyssey collection boasts a sleek, black-and-gold aesthetic that promises to make Kratos and his companions look more striking as they navigate the realms of Norse mythology. Alongside Kratos, both Atreus and Freya will receive their own unique cosmetic sets, with a range of shields and weapons also getting the Dark Odyssey treatment.
The centerpiece of the update is a Dark Odyssey appearance and armor set for Kratos, reminiscent of a legendary skin from God of War 2 that was exclusive to players who conquered the game on God Mode difficulty. This coveted set can be claimed from any Lost Items chest in the base game or directly in the roguelike Valhalla mode of God of War Ragnarök post-update. Additionally, the update will introduce the much-anticipated feature allowing players to customize the appearance of Kratos’ weapons without affecting their abilities.

Given that God of War Ragnarök was released in late 2022, a single update wouldn't suffice to honor the series' 20-year legacy. Sony has planned a series of events and offers to commemorate this milestone. Fans can look forward to a variety of activities, including downloadable social media assets available here, an art showcase in collaboration with Los Angeles' Gallery Nucleus, new merchandise, sales, multiple vinyl releases that span the franchise's history, and much more.
"On behalf of everyone at Santa Monica Studio, we are immeasurably grateful to have had the chance to build the legacy of this series with and for you, the fans of God of War," the studio expressed their appreciation.
For those eager to further celebrate 20 years of God of War, you can attend an upcoming PlayStation symphony world tour starting next month. Additionally, delve into why the next God of War title needs to be just as creative as its predecessors for more insights into the future of the series.
