Guillermo del Toro's lifelong fascination with Frankenstein is almost as legendary as the monster itself. A recent Netflix preview showcased a first look at his highly anticipated adaptation, featuring Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein. While a trailer won't be released until summer, the image offers a glimpse into del Toro's vision.
“This project has captivated me since childhood—for 50 years,” del Toro shared in a video message, as reported by Variety. “I've pursued this adaptation for two to three decades. Some might even say I'm obsessed with Frankenstein.” He playfully gestured to his extensive collection of Frankenstein memorabilia in his dedicated "Frankenstein room" at Bleak House.
Del Toro also teased exclusive footage, revealing Oscar Isaac's Victor Frankenstein in a confrontation with Mia Goth, portraying a wealthy aristocrat. Jacob Elordi's portrayal of the monster was described as having "long black hair, stitched-up gray skin, and a glint of red in his eyes." This footage remains unavailable online.
“Over the years, the character has become intrinsically linked to my identity; it’s essentially an autobiography,” del Toro explained. “It doesn't get more personal than this.”
Del Toro's dedication to this project is undeniable. The long and winding road to bringing this Frankenstein to the screen is a story in itself, a testament to the director's unwavering passion.
