Rumored Oblivion Remake Fuels Fan Excitement for 2025
A LinkedIn profile belonging to a game developer strongly suggests an Oblivion remake, powered by Unreal Engine 5, is currently under development. This adds significant weight to long-standing rumors and recent leaks surrounding the project.
Speculation about an Oblivion remake has circulated for years, with a 2023 rumor predicting a 2024 or 2025 release. Xbox insider Jez Corden further fueled the anticipation in late December 2024, suggesting a reveal during a potential January 2025 Xbox Developer Direct. While unconfirmed, the precedent of similar events in January 2023 and 2024 makes this a plausible scenario.
The latest evidence comes from a Technical Art Director at Virtuos, a Chinese development studio reportedly involved in the project. Their LinkedIn profile lists work on an "unannounced Unreal Engine 5 remake for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S." While the game isn't explicitly named, the context and engine specification strongly point towards Oblivion, suggesting a full-blown remake rather than a simple remaster. This contrasts with the previously rumored Fallout 3 remaster, whose status remains unclear.
LinkedIn Profile Strengthens Remake Claims
Released in 2006, Oblivion (the sequel to 2002's Morrowind) earned widespread critical acclaim for its expansive world, visuals, and music. Interestingly, a dedicated fan community has been working on the Skyblivion mod since 2012, aiming to recreate Oblivion within Skyrim's engine. A recent update from the Skyblivion team hints at a potential 2025 release for their ambitious project.
The future of the Elder Scrolls franchise beyond Oblivion remains somewhat shrouded in mystery. The only trailer for The Elder Scrolls VI debuted in 2018, and Bethesda Game Studios has indicated it will follow Starfield in development. Director Todd Howard's prediction of a release "15 to 17 years after Skyrim" offers little in the way of concrete timing. However, fans are hopeful for a new Elder Scrolls VI trailer before the end of 2025.
