For fans of the long-running franchise Digimon, the upcoming Digimon Con 2025 promises to be an exciting event. You can expect a slew of new announcements and updates on upcoming projects within the franchise, but it's one particular teaser that has piqued our interest: a confused Renamon alongside a mobile phone.
This teaser strongly suggests the possibility of a digital version of the Digimon Trading Card Game (TCG). While a tutorial app for iOS and Android already exists (as with many of Bandai Namco's physical trading card games), the emergence of Pokémon TCG Pocket sets a precedent that Digimon could follow.
However, it's wise to temper our expectations a bit. The teaser might indicate that mobile is either the platform for this new project or simply a way to watch the upcoming livestream later this week.
Going digitalIt's safe to say that while Digimon is not unpopular, it is often overshadowed by Pokémon. During the late '90s and 2000s, there was a notable rivalry between the two, but while Digimon may be the preferred choice among nostalgic anime enthusiasts, Pokémon has firmly secured the global pop culture crown.
Launching a digital TCG might not be an automatic success for Digimon as it has been for Pokémon. Yet, it wouldn't be a significant risk either, given the existing popularity of the Digimon TCG. Making it more accessible to players could be a significant achievement. We'll have to wait and see by tuning into the upcoming Digimon Con livestream later this month.
