One of the earliest significant challenges players will encounter in *Dynasty Warriors: Origins* is the battle against Zhang Jiao, the leader of the Yellow Turbans. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to defeat him effectively.
How To Fight Zhang Jiao’s First Phase
The initial confrontation with Zhang Jiao takes place in a vast wasteland, setting the stage for a one-on-one duel. During this phase, Zhang Jiao employs sorcery to hurl stones at you across the arena. When you're close to him, he'll summon four stones that you must evade swiftly. If you maintain your distance, he'll summon twice as many stones, launching them in pairs that you can dodge by circling around him. Staying too close when he unleashes his full barrage of stones can result in significant damage, so it's crucial to keep your distance.
Although Zhang Jiao's primary strategy is to keep you at bay, he also possesses close-range attacks. These include basic combos that you can parry and an area-of-effect (AOE) attack intended to repel you. Watch for Zhang Jiao glowing white, signaling an impending AOE attack, and retreat to avoid damage.
As the fight progresses, Zhang Jiao will employ attacks accompanied by a red aura, which cannot be interrupted. These involve summoning numerous rocks to fall around him and creating several clones. The best approach during these moments is to withdraw and wait out his assault before resuming your attack. Ensure you're equipped with a sword for optimal damage output, as opposed to less effective weapons like spears or gauntlets.
Monitoring your health is crucial, as you'll likely have only four healing opportunities, depending on your upgraded skills. Remember, there are jars near the arena's entrance containing meat buns. Use these moments of retreat from Zhang Jiao’s attacks to replenish your health by grabbing some buns.
How To Fight Zhang Jiao’s Second Phase
Upon unlocking Musou Rage, the second phase begins, with additional Yellow Turbans joining Zhang Jiao. Fortunately, your own forces will also appear, providing much-needed support. This phase is an ideal time to heal by dashing to the entrance and grabbing those meat buns. Be mindful of Zhang Jiao's new tactic of summoning tornadoes that can toss you around while you're engaged with his troops.
After thinning out his soldiers, Zhang Jiao will initiate a Grand Tactic, requiring you to defeat 300 soldiers within a short timeframe to prevent a devastating attack. Complicating matters further, Zhang Jiao will summon lightning strikes across the arena. Keep an eye on the ground for closing rings and evade when they flash. The most efficient way to clear the Yellow Turbans quickly is by using Musou Mode, which, if timed correctly, can dispatch dozens at once. Despite having access to Musou Rage Mode, the time constraints make sticking to the basic Musou Mode more practical.
Successfully thwarting Zhang Jiao’s Grand Tactic twice will bring him back to the battlefield, employing the same strategies from Phase 1. With your army's support, finishing off his remaining health should be manageable, thus concluding Chapter 1.
That's the strategy to defeat Zhang Jiao in *Dynasty Warriors: Origins*.
