Should You Fight Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins?
Let's be clear: Lu Bu is brutally difficult. My own victory took over an hour. However, the rewards are significant. Bragging rights alone are a powerful motivator. Furthermore, facing Lu Bu isn't always optional; the Shu and Wei storylines in Chapter 4 mandate a confrontation at the Battle of Xiapi. Finally, defeating him at Hulao Gate unlocks the "The Strongest" trophy, and a post-game victory earns you the game's ultimate weapon – the halberd.
Lu Bu’s First Phase
Before engaging Lu Bu, strategic preparation is key. Equip a multi-hit sword to stagger him, and choose Battle Arts with minimal Bravery requirements, rapid activation, and wide range. My loadout included Falcon Flurry, Mad Blade Rush, Absconding Slash, and Flying Dragon Slash. Boost your survivability with accessories like Divine Bird’s Wing and Divine Turtle’s Shell; Lu Bu hits incredibly hard. A weapon granting Bravery on Perfect Evades is also crucial, as this will be your primary Bravery source.
Initially, Lu Bu rides Red Hare. This phase is relatively straightforward. He charges around, occasionally pausing. Exploit these pauses to unleash your Battle Arts, then quickly retreat. His attacks, excluding Red Hare's devastating jump attack, have limited area of effect, making evasion manageable. Once his health drops to 80%, he dismounts, and the real fight begins.
Lu Bu’s Second Phase

On foot, Lu Bu’s ferocity increases dramatically. His attacks are swift and unpredictable. A red aura indicates an uninterruptible combo; evade and prepare for a series of charges (usually three). He sometimes attempts a grab attack without his spear – easily evaded like his other charges.
His most dangerous move is signaled by an orange glow. This rapid attack launches three devastating arrows three times, quickly depleting your health. Absconding Slash, a ranged Battle Art, is your best counter. Close-range arts are suicide. Keep your Musou gauge full for emergency invincibility.
Lu Bu is surprisingly juggle-able in this phase. Consistent attacks quickly charge your Battle Arts, enabling faster Fortitude meter depletion. Maintain close proximity for better reaction time, and remember: evasion is paramount.
Lu Bu’s Final Phase
Upon reaching a certain health threshold, Lu Bu enters Musou Rage. This final phase is relentless; he’s unstaggerable and unleashes a furious barrage of attacks. The objective: break his Fortitude before he executes his Musou attack. Since staggering is impossible, utilize all remaining resources – Musou attacks (when close), Battle Arts, and rapid, powerful strikes. A successful Musou attack will be immediately followed by another, forcing a restart if you fail to break his Fortitude. Success here brings victory over this formidable foe.
