Get Ready for an Xbox Android App with Game Purchases!
Earlier this year, Xbox president Sarah Bond revealed plans for a mobile storefront. Now, it seems an Xbox Android app with exciting new features is launching very soon – potentially as early as next month!
The Details
The app's November release date was announced by Bond on X (formerly Twitter). This new app will allow Android users to purchase and play games directly within the app itself. This development is a direct result of a recent court ruling in Google's antitrust battle with Epic Games. The ruling mandates that Google Play offer increased choice and flexibility, opening the door for rival app stores.
The ruling requires Google to provide third-party app stores with access to its complete app catalog for three years (November 1st, 2024 – November 1st, 2027), unless individual developers opt out.
What Makes This Xbox App Different?
While an existing Xbox app allows Android users to download games to their Xbox consoles and stream games via Game Pass Ultimate, the November update adds the crucial ability to directly purchase games through the app.
We'll have a complete understanding of the app's features once it's released in November. For further details, check out the CNBC article mentioned in the original piece.
