10 LitRPG Books I Recommend You Start Reading in 2025
Mar 18,2025Author: Natalie
Reading is my absolute favorite pastime. While I enjoy video games and TV, nothing compares to immersing myself in a captivating book series. My reading journey began with Harry Potter, branching out to sci-fi, fantasy, mysteries, and even non-fiction. However, my true literary passion ignited upon discovering the LitRPG genre—a captivating obsession that now defines my reading life. If you're intrigued by the world of LitRPG, here are some of my top recommendations:
A fantastic aspect of these books is their availability through Kindle Unlimited. Given the length of some series, a subscription offers significant savings. Audible subscriptions provide an alternative listening option.
What is LitRPG?
For newcomers, LitRPG stands for literary role-playing game. The stories incorporate RPG elements reminiscent of video games. While some involve characters literally entering video games, the genre's scope is much broader. All LitRPG features game-like elements, but not all mimic video games precisely. The books below share leveling systems and power hierarchies the protagonists must navigate through experience. I've included a mix of progression fantasy and LitRPG, offering similar reading experiences.
Fast-paced, action-packed, and brimming with witty dialogue, *He Who Fights with Monsters* features a unique leveling system and memorable characters. It's a must-read for fantasy comedy lovers. This remains my favorite LitRPG series, with each installment maintaining the high quality of the first.
The story follows Jason Asano, who awakens in a magical world with newfound powers and a surprising lack of hair. His resilient and unconventional approach helps him navigate cannibals, monsters, and even complex relationships. A fantastic read with a morally gray protagonist you'll adore.
The series is currently eleven books strong, with more to come from author Shirtaloon.
Less traditional than other entries, *The Path of Ascension* features a rich universe centered around magical dungeon portals ("rifts") and powerful immortals.
The story follows Matt, an orphan who dreams of conquering rifts and the monsters that killed his parents. His initial setback—a weak Tier 1 talent—forces him to overcome adversity through hard work and determination.
While the first book captivated me, the character development in books two and three cemented its place among my favorites.
A fast-paced adventure that never slows down, *Dungeon Crawler Carl* offers a unique protagonist and a charming cat companion, Princess Donut (arguably the true star).
The story follows Carl, unexpectedly stuck with his ex's cat when the world ends, forcing them into an underground dungeon hosting an intergalactic game show run by advanced races and a chaotic AI. It's a fun adventure with witty dialogue, action, and satisfying skill progression.
The seventh book, released in 2024, maintains the intrigue of the first. Author Matt Dinniman's other works are also worth exploring.
Similar to *The Path of Ascension*, the *Cradle* series doesn't involve dimensional travel. Instead, it immerses you in a deep, existing world with a unique power cultivation system and a likable protagonist. It's a top pick for fantasy fans, even those not strictly into LitRPG.
The story follows Lindon, an "Unsouled" individual seemingly destined for powerlessness. However, a twist of fate provides him a path forward.
The twelve-book *Cradle* series offers a satisfying conclusion. Will Wight's other works are also highly recommended.
This series stands out. While others focus on action and adventure, *Beware of Chicken* offers a unique perspective: a cultivator who abandons power to become a farmer.
Jin Rou, a hard-working cultivator, dies, and his consciousness is replaced by someone from Earth. The new Jin Rou chooses a peaceful life as a farmer, unexpectedly discovering a new source of power.
This unexpected and delightful series offers a relaxing yet satisfying LitRPG experience.
The longest series on this list, *Defiance of the Fall*, is a worthwhile commitment. The story starts strong and maintains its momentum as the protagonist faces continuous challenges.
Zachary Atwood finds himself alone when the world integrates into the multiverse. A new "System" with quests forces him to survive an invasion with minimal resources. His fight for family reveals the secrets of this new existence.
With fourteen books and a fifteenth on the way, this series offers a complex leveling system and intriguing story.
This series avoids detailed stat sheets and complex leveling systems. Instead, it presents a world ruled by powerful beings who grant "attunements" to those who survive their trials.
The first-person narrative follows Corin Cadence, who seeks an attunement after his brother's death. His journey through the spires leads to new discoveries and friendships at Lorian Heights Academy.
This series, with its magic school setting and rich fantasy elements, provides an accessible introduction to the genre. Andrew Rowe's companion series are also recommended.
For stealth game enthusiasts, *The Grand Game* is a superb choice. The protagonist is an assassin who prefers subtlety over brute force.
Michael, with amnesia, finds himself in the Forever Kingdom, navigating a dungeon and leveling up while uncovering the secrets of the world and his role in "The Grand Game."
This unique take on the genre is highly enjoyable. Books eight and nine are available for pre-order.
An excellent entry-level LitRPG series, *The Completionist Chronicles* offers familiar MMO elements with unique twists.
Joe, a wheelchair-bound ex-military medic, immerses himself in a virtual MMORPG, discovering a secret class—the Ritualist—and leveling up through quests.
The series evolves rapidly, introducing new worlds, but remains engaging throughout.
A slow-burn series, *Level Up or Die* takes place in the literal underworld.
Elorian, a gamer, finds himself trapped in the underworld with other players, gaining magical powers but facing a relentless succubus who seeks to drain their power.
With vampires, dragons, demons, and giant lava cats, this series offers a thrilling adventure ideal for LitRPG beginners.
