Digital Revolution of Devarattam

Under the banner of my project, "Digital Revolution of Devarattam," I have developed an app that celebrates and spreads the rich cultural heritage of this traditional Tamil Nadu folk dance. This initiative is dedicated to the legends of Devarattam, including the esteemed Kalaimamani awardees Mr. M Kumararaman, a retired teacher, Mr. M Kannan Kumar, and Mr. K Nellai Manikandan from Zamin Kodangipatti, who have been honored with the Kalaimamani, Kalaimani, and Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar awards respectively. My dedication extends to my guru, Mr. E Rajakamulu, and other beloved legends of Devarattam.

The primary goal of the Devarattam app is to showcase and promote Devarattam and its awardees. Devarattam, a vibrant folk dance, has been performed by the Rajakambalathu Nayakkar community both in ancient times and today. This dance is characterized by its intricate steps, ranging from 32 to 72, with the 32 steps forming the foundational sequence, while the others serve as variations.

Performers of Devarattam are adorned with salangai on each leg and hold a kerchief in each hand, dancing to the rhythms produced by the traditional musical instrument known as the Deva Thunthumi. This app not only educates users about the dance but also celebrates the artists who have dedicated their lives to preserving and promoting this cultural treasure.
