Application Description
Blackjack, also known as Blackjack, is the most popular casino table game. It is widely available at online casinos and is a popular choice for playing through bonuses due to its low house edge and acceptable variance.
Rules and Gameplay
In Blackjack, the value of a hand is determined by the sum of the card values. For instance, a hand with a 4, 5, and 6 has a value of 15. Face cards (Jack, Queen, King) are worth 10, while Aces can be valued as either 1 or 11. The goal of Blackjack is to have a hand value that is higher than the dealer's without exceeding 21. A hand value over 21 is considered a "bust," and the player loses their bet. A two-card hand with a value of 21 is called a "Blackjack" and is the highest-ranking hand. Players receive a bonus payout for a Blackjack, typically 3:2, while other winning hands pay 1:1.
After placing a bet, the player and dealer receive two cards each. One of the dealer's cards is face up, while the other is face down. Under standard rules, if the dealer's face-up card is an Ace or a 10-point card, they will check for a Blackjack. If the dealer has an Ace showing, players have the option to purchase "insurance" against the dealer having a Blackjack. Insurance pays 2:1 if the dealer's face-down card is a 10 or face card, completing a Blackjack. In single-hand play, the house edge on the insurance bet ranges from 2% to 15%, depending on the number of decks and cards played. Therefore, it is generally not advantageous for players to purchase insurance, except in specific situations where the deck is known to be rich in tens (e.g., multi-hand play with 1-2 decks and few tens drawn, or card counting).
If the dealer does not have a Blackjack, the player must decide how to play their hand. The available options are:
- Stand: The player keeps their current hand and ends their turn.
- Hit: The player takes another card. They can continue hitting until they reach 21 or bust.
- Double: The player doubles their bet and receives one additional card. The hand ends after this third card is drawn. Players can only double on a two-card hand.
- Split: If the player has two cards of equal value, they can split them into two separate hands. The player's bet is doubled to cover both hands. After splitting, the player receives one additional card for each hand, creating two two-card hands. If the player splits a pair of Aces, the hand ends after the second card is drawn. For other pairs, the player can choose to hit, stand, or double on each of the resulting hands. A second split may also be allowed.
Strategy
Despite the seemingly complex rules, the optimal strategy for Blackjack is relatively straightforward. There are no strategic decisions regarding which cards to take or whether to hit or stand. Players simply place a bet on either the Banker or Player hand, wait for the dealer to reveal the cards, and determine if they have won or lost. Banker bets typically have a slightly lower house edge than Player bets, as explained below. Therefore, the optimal strategy is to consistently bet on the Banker hand.
