A West African strategy game

Known as Awale, Ayo, or Oware, this two-player game belongs to the Mancala family, sharing similarities with East African games like Omweso, Bao, and Igisoro.

Awale uses a board with eight holes per player and sixty-four playing pieces (seeds or stones).

Each player's territory consists of the row of holes closest to them.

The objective is to capture the opponent's pieces, ideally all of them, to win the game.

Other games in the Mancala family include Ayo, Kisoro, and Omweso. It is believed that Mancala games originated in Ethiopia during the Aksumite Kingdom.
